Did you know that for a few months every single year you can buy and serve fresh Hurst’s Kiwi Berries? Yes, you read that correctly, kiwi berries. Not quite kiwi, and not quite all berry, these delicious treats are a relatively new crop to the HBF Crops, and they have been thrilling taste buds around the world since we first started growing and shipping them!
So what in the world is a kiwi berry?
“Kiwi berries are one of the most exciting new fruits to come into the produce market in years. About the size of a grape, kiwi berries are a small variety of kiwi fruit that have a smooth, edible skin. The fuzz-free exterior makes it easy to pop this berry-like fruit into your mouth as a quick and delicious snack. Kiwi berries are best to eat when soft – the softer the berry the sweeter the taste. They are also great in fruit salads! Kiwi berries are packed with flavor… but they have a short season, so get them while you can!”
Besides being the perfect snack size, these little gems come with some incredible health benefits:
- Rich in Vitamin C
- Low in Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium
- High in Fiber, Potassium, Vitamin E and Magnesium
Check out a few fun facts about these delicious treats!
Kiwi Berries have no fuzz, unlike their counterparts, the regular kiwi. Genetically, these little guys came up perfectly bald, which is ideal for popping them straight into your mouth without having to peel.
It’s good to let them soften! When these berries are soft, they’re at their sweetest (remember from the blurb above, “The softer the berry the sweeter the taste?”)
A six ounce clamshell of kiwi berries only has 130 calories and one gram of fat! (Yes, only one gram of fat for the whole container, making these the perfect go-to snack or ingredient!)
Be sure to be on the lookout over the next few weeks for kiwi berries recipes and videos, just in time for the harvest!
Looking forward to a fruitful fall season!
